  5. Hi Girl FAS,

    A quiet moment for relaxation is essential, and if that’s the book you’re reading, by Harper Lee, it would be as relevant today as it was in America and elsewhere where racism exists.

    Rape and racism are serious subjects well expressed in this book. Racial inequality, class structures, and gender issues discussed in the book still abound in America and in other countries, even in Europe.

    The image projected in the book of the lead character, a lawyer, is a very ideal representation of an enlightened attitude with enough courage and conviction to convince others of the truth - despite the prejudice of race and class. But such lawyers may be rare and perhaps in near extinction. Some can be found in human rights organizations and other social causes, but may not have the integrity and respect for the spirit of the law as the lead character in the novel had.

    Lawyers today are more market oriented, preferring to go into deals than search for the truth and impose the just consequence. Others are more inclined to sensationalize to get national attention, in preparation for public office. It’s a scarce supply of true defenders or prosecutors who adhere to the noble and rightful intent for which the laws, based on the constitution, were created.

    Today, even the nobility of the law is doubtful as there are hidden agenda that would benefit certain interest groups. You can spot these only by reading - not just novels, but global developments as well. Everything is inter-connected and what is put forward are the interests of big business under the cover of their country’s interests, which is further cloaked by democracy and all those democratic ideals which the country supposedly stands for; but which protects the interest of their cronies who support their candidacies.

    Some authors publish novels in fiction because they cannot prove their case in court, but their novels have tremendous information and analysis based on interviewed sources that could tell the real story which news headlines don’t present. Try to get a copy of “The Afghan” by Frederick Forsyth, its details will make you realize what the wars are all about and how they affect global economies - including ours.

    It doesn’t take much time to get a grasp of these things in the global environment once you read the right things. Harper Lee’s book provides a lot of insights on the basics of prejudice which is a great backgrounder.

    As I commented in your “6 Months Ago” post, keep reading, and by the time you’re 40, you’ll be a political and global economy analyst; at 50, a budding guru, at 60, a woman of wisdom and courage of convictions and a doting grandma. LOL! By then, who would care if you had eyebags or wrinkles? They would only want to experience what you have on that beautiful and ever sharp mind of yours that remains progressive and idealistic, tolerant of differences and accepting of change; providing all the opportunities to the younger set and supporting their chosen direction; and doing your bit to make this world a better place for others.

    Of course, it would help to some degree if you could retain good looks and clear skin. LOL! That’s a chauvinist line and just a joke. Stay well. :-) –Durano, done!

  6. @tammy, you have a great blog. =)

    @shannon, we all need a quiet house sometimes.

    @manilenya, hi girl.

    @ria, talagang tamad ka na bumalik sa work noh. nakakatamad naman talaga.

    @durano, thanks for the book recommendation. I read this book a long time ago and the funny thing is, I don’t remember the gist of the story. What I do remember are Boo Radley and the fact that I cried at one point while reading this.

    Regarding my post on turning 40, there’s a lot of women who are successful and still look good despite the age. So you could just imagine the pressure it’s doing me.
