update: making better choices

One of my goals this year is to go totally green. For the last few months, I have been using my reusable bag to the grocery and have been refraining from taking plastic bags from shops and boutiques. Hopefully, everyone would follow suit and become aware of the harmful effects plastics can do for the environment.

It’s great that finally a big company like WholeFoods in the US, has aimed to raise and set the standards of excellence in food retailers. That’s good news. I hope other big companies would do the same and stop producing products with high fructose syrup because it’s really hard staying healthy nowadays. Thought you might like to know, I’ve turned vegetarian. It’s been two weeks now that I haven’t eaten any meat. Though I haven’t really lost significant amount of weight, I just feel healthier. I miss my hamburger, of course but for my body’s sake, I’d rather eat my cabbage or kangkong than anything that has legs and walks.

Still on the subject of going green and organic, I’ve started to research on personal care products and have been conscious on what I use and apply to my body. I’m pretty sure not everyone knows this.

FACT (may serve as a warning, too):

The U.S. government does not require health studies or pre-market testing for personal care products.

Good news or bad news? It depends. If you’re the business owner or manufacturer, this is good news. It means no extra expenses, manpower, liabilities etc. So what does this mean for the rest of us? Bad news for the consumer who is always on the lookout for safe and effective personal care products. We are oftentimes misinformed or misled.

There is a lot of confusion about “natural” products. If it contains orange extract or aloe vera extract, is it natural already? What about the other ingredients mixed in?

Ingredients of my former shampoo: Water (Aqua), Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Ammonium Laureth sulfate, Cocamide MEA, Ammonium Chloride, PEG 5-cocamide, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Fragrance, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, Tetra Sodium EDTA, DMDM Hydantoin, Citric Acid, Aloe vera extract, Vitamin E acetate, Blue 1, Ext. Violet 2.

This is a deep cleansing shampoo with natural ingredients. Yeah right. There are a couple of natural ingredients thrown in but I’m actually paying for those two actual ingredients I need and artificial additives they call parabens that my computer does not even recognize. What more my hair and body?

Another Fact:
There are many non-natural components and processes in most U.S. body care products. Even those labeled “natural” may contain harsh preservatives or ingredients with environmental concerns.

Have you heard about the dangers of parabens? I’ve recently switched to paraben-free products. Why the switch? To lose weight, of course. This is my no. 1 goal if you haven’t noticed yet. No, just kidding. But it is partly true. Parabens can mimic the hormone estrogen, which can interfere with the production of the body’s natural hormones leading to weight gain. But more importantly, parabens can play a role in the development of breast cancers. Parabens can be found in shampoos and conditioners, moisturizers, underarm deodorants, shaving gels, toothpaste and other personal care and pharmaceutical products. So, look for products that don’t contain any parabens or ingredients starting with words like methyl, propyl or butyl.

Now, let’s compare that to my shampoo today: Aqua, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Wheat Germ, Sodium Chloride, Glycerin, Citric Acid, Arctium Lappa (Burdock Root Extract), Panthenol Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Hydrolized Soy Protein, Rosmarinus Officinale (Rosemary), Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender), Citrus Reticulata (Tangerine).

This is a shampoo for normal to dry hair. No artificial ingredients and colors and best of all, it is paraben-free. After using these products for a week, I’ve noticed that I have less falling hair and the fragrance and softness stay longer. Aside from my shampoo, I’ve added a few extra to my personal hair and body care.

These products are available at Whole Foods Market. For store details, click here. At Whole Foods, you can be sure that they’ve screened all products and they only carry those which are considered natural and safe for you and the environment. And they even raised the bar in the industry by coming up with their Premium Body Care.

Be conscious of what you use for your body. What goes on the body, goes in the body, too. Never doubt that for a second.

project: kcee, the artist-cum-writer and her bag

I normally do my blog reading and posting on the bed with my kid beside me. Whenever I’m busy with blogging, I make sure that she’s busy, too. I give her writing and tracing activities or coloring books. I glance at her work from time to time. She doesn’t mind me at all. I guess she does not find my work interesting enough to merit her attention. But tables are turned whenever I read KCee’s blog. She puts down her work and keeps on saying her friend’s name while pointing at either Kcee’s entrecard widget or the photos of her daughter. She thinks KCee’s kid is her friend Onisa.

KCee and I have many things in common. We both love to write. We have daughters, more or less the same age. We display our children’s art in our blogs. We are in our 30’s and and we sometimes worry about aging.
We’re coffee drinkers and Starbucks is heaven for us. And we both love Benicio Del Toro. I think we were sisters in our past lives.

Now, let’s see if you too have something in common with KCee.

My Bag

Contents

These are the basic items in my bag - wallet, mobile phone, perfume, mineral loose powder, lip gloss, alcohol ( I prefer this over hand sanitizers, I feel they don’t kill enough germs!), facial tissue, a minimum of 2 pens (I usually have 4 of them), cutter (this will be useful in case of stranger attack. Quite paranoid, huh!).

About Me

I have a full time day job, but I also do freelance jobs after office. Actually, I tend to enjoy more the latter. It’s my dream to become a stay-at-home mom and go full time on freelancing. Oh, if only I could!

Some find it too juvenile to write in a diary. I don’t. I believe nobody is too young or too old for this activity that actually empowers and inspires the writer in some way. I have always felt a sense of security and comfort putting my thoughts on paper, as it unloads what occupies my mind and heart which can be quite liberating. Through the years, I have collected a number of diaries in different colors, shapes and sizes, and it’s always an emotional trip down memory lane whenever I start flipping the pages.

It was two years ago when I started blogging, but it’s only now that I have dedicated more time and effort into it. For me it’s pretty much like keeping a diary, except that I do it now by typing my thoughts and publishing them online for everyone to read. I’m currently enjoying meeting great people from all over the world that I wouldn’t have met had I not been blogging.

Thanks KCee and keep on writing. You’re next zerisse! And check out other contributors while you’re here.

dailies

dailies: a kid with responsibilities

Grunt qualifies as a form of communication in the home front nowadays. This is my reaction to everything lately. If you want to talk to me, expect rolling of the eyes and a deep sigh, grunt or groan. With tuition fee increase, PMS, car repair expenses piling up and the upcoming wedding of a friend in less than two weeks, I’m at my wit’s end and I’m not even close to my target weight.

So this is how it feels like to be an adult. It’s like being a child. Nothing has changed. I still feel helpless most days except that people in the stores now call me ma’am. My mom does not scold me anymore when she walks into my room and sees a pile of dirty laundry. I could even leave them on the floor and I wouldn’t hear a thing. Coming from a rather big family and sharing my things with my siblings, having my own refrigerator, TV, car, closet and bathroom is a big deal and a big payoff. I’ll be 37 next year and these are some of the few instances I like being an adult.

But it’s beginning to dawn on me that adulthood is not only the thrill of independence. The sad truth is there’s no point to being an adult if you’re anything like me. I’m just an adult because my age and responsibility tell me so. A kid just getting old with responsibilities. Don’t be surprised if I put out my tongue or bite you when I don’t get my way.

project: ria’s organized bag

It’s project time once again and I’d like to thank all the people who have sent their articles so far.
So today we’re in for something lovely because this girl seems to have no problem in the world (though, she has gone through a lot). She seems so positive about life that it’s contagious sometimes. It would be a pleasure to introduce this bubbly and very friendly girl who I met in Blogcatalog. I think I joined her ongoing discussion and she was kind enough to visit my site and comment.

She was also the first person who has seen my whole face. Here’s the story. I was up late at night and tried to experiment with my profile in Blogcatalog. I tried to upload some of my photos, trying to see which one would look nice all the while thinking that no one could see them. It was only a matter of minutes but unfortunately, Ria was up too and saw them. Read what she had to say.

Still, I was not brave enough to leave it be. As you have probably noticed, I don’t show my whole face–not in my profile, not in my posts and not for the next month or so. Here’s to Ria who has seen my face and who I’ll be having coffee with in person when she visits this July . I’m looking forward to it. =)

What’s inside my bag?

P1040334Everytime I have to change bag to match my outfit has caused me some dilemma. Not that I have gazillions of bags to choose from but I just wonder which bag will suffice to accommodate the stuff I’ll be putting in =)

At the time I got the tag, I am using my favourite brown bag and just for the sake of divulging to the public what I cannot live without, here they are:

P1040334P1040322P1040322

I have my mobile phone, a small notebook to jot down ideas (& the plate numbers of those who cut me on the road! Hahaha), a sachet of “ampalaya (bitter gourd)” tea, pack of gum, USB flash, 2 cds, my wallet, my rosary, car keys/house keys, wet wipes, hair brush, small make-up kit (full of glosses, eyeliners, and a Vandol Ointment tube which I use as a layer for my lip gloss (it softens my lips. I swear!!!!), my company ID and my favourite compact – La Prairie. I swear, if this bag can still hold another item, my sunglasses will be in it too! I decided to leave it in the car. No more space…=)

You might wonder how they all fit in my medium-sized shoulder bag, well, it’s just a matter of how you organize to accommodate all. No tricks!!! All of them are there. The phone is kept at the side of my wallet and the small stuff are in the pocket and remember the 2 pockets outside the bag? The car/house keys are in the other side and the gum and flash disk are in the other. Presto!

There goes…

A little info about my blog:

My party is a site for everything I want to talk about or whatever strikes me at the moment. Mostly it’ll be about my life, family issues, friends, shopping, travel, arts and craft of my daughter and some snippets of life’s philosophy and oh, throw in some creative juice of my poetic side ;)

A little background on the author:

I started blogging in late 2005 out of boredom. I thought “why not put all those ‘angst’ into words” and so I did. My blogs were rather bleak and gloomy because that’s how I felt that time – bleak and gloomy. However, I stopped when one of my family members passed away. I temporarily lost all will to squeeze my brains for some creative juice. I decided to stay under the radar until lately. My Uncle (Ruan’s Corner) prodded me to blog. I gave in and never turned my back again. I have met great blog friends like the author of this tag – Chi and have gained readers world-wide. Who would have thought that this blogging thing will open many opportunities and weave friendships in the process? I guess I’m staying on the ride for as long as I can. Now, my perspective in life has changed dramatically so more of my thoughts are inspired by my family, my positive outlook in life and the friends who make my party rock!

—–

Thanks Ria for letting us peak into your bag and your life. See you soon. You’re next Kcee.

what’s up: debranding your home

How many times have I bought something because it’s pretty? How many times have I been influenced by brand names? Many times. I’m such a sucker when it comes to good packaging. I buy soaps and shampoos that have pretty packaging and interesting designs. Some products normally have the same ingredients and this is where packaging plays the crucial part. When there is really a cheaper version but not-so-nice packaging.

Well, we can now go generic and put them inside these brand-less glass and plastic bottles and use these stickers/lables. We can finally make life and choices simpler. Debrand your home. Now you can put the cheap shampoo and generic body wash in your guest bathroom and your guests will never know the difference. You can now have an aesthetically pleasing shelf in the shower at less cost. Clever, clever, clever.

dailies

dailies: i need you

Let me introduce you to a wanna-be artist. ME. I love to write. I love to take photographs. I’m a “licensed” make-up artist if there’s such a thing. I even dabbled on haircutting and styling at some point in my life. What does this tell you? I’m fickle-minded. I have a short attention span. I lose interest easily. I’m the real runaway bride. I have no sense of identity.

But I love beautiful things. I get inspiration from them. I see an antique chair and I dream about it. I love the beach. I can wake up to the sound of the sea everyday. Ok, maybe not everyday. An occasional jeepney blaring its horn is a welcome change. Perhaps, my blog truly reflects the real me. It’s evolving. What started out as a simple journal of my life turned into a vehicle for meeting like-minded people and a diary for my inspiration.

If you’re a regular here, you might have noticed the changes. I’ve added some features that I rather enjoy but that aren’t typical or normal of mommy blogs– project series, style and photo of the day. And I might add other features in the future.

The good thing about a blog versus a regular website is the relationships it forms and the opinions of everyone. I love reading your comment about any subject at hand. So, naturally, if I have a biggie, I would consult my readers about it. Do you like my blog? What else do you want to find here? And before I end this, I will also address the subject of ad revenue and paid posts because this is an ongoing issue among many bloggers that I just really want to get out in the open.

What’s the difference between paid posts and product reviews? This is my POV. A paid post is being paid to write about something you probably have or haven’t tried and tested. A product review is just the opposite. Which brings me to another question. Should I continue with paid posts? Socialspark is good and all. I’ve met some nice people over there. But how long does it take to get a rejection or an approval for my posts? Makes me wonder if payment would be this way, too. Anyway, I’m still having problems. I don’t feel comfortable writing those posts. I’m no longer enjoying it. But I want to earn. Who doesn’t? Which brings me to this:

YES. I will accept advertisers, product reviews and even donations.
NO. Advertisers will not affect the content.

And please give me samples so I could make a decent and proper review. Or maybe this is just a phase. I might change again next week. Gosh.
