It’s my 36th birthday today. But there’s no celebration or party. Just spending the day with my kids and partner. Won’t even go out to eat, we’ll probably just order in. I noticed that when you hit past 30, celebrations become more serene or tamer. I guess I just don’t wanna be reminded that I’m already middle age. Worse, I don’t want others to know either.
Why do we obsess so much about our age? It’s just a number. Others stop counting at age 30. Some lie about their age for too long that they, themselves, don’t know their real age anymore. A friend of mine even makes herself younger than her age although her real age shows through her wrinkled and sun-damaged skin. My own mother still thinks that she can get away with lying to everyone that’s she’s only 40. My nieces and nephews laugh about this coz they know that their grandma is lying. They would even joke around that she gave birth to me at age 5. These observations are not limited to women. Even men lie about their age.
So, who was the first one to greet me? My partner in crime of course. Some of my friends did remember and we got to talk to each other and promised to have lunch one of these days. My father did call but my only brother didn’t even know that it was my birthday although we’ve been talking to each other all day long about the car he bought from my partner. Talk about busy busy. That’s my brother. Busy making money.
Weeks before my birthday, I thought about how to celebrate in ways I haven’t done before. Some of the things I thought about was to take a trip to Quezon and visit the many food destinations there. Talk about pigging out. I was hoping that this would to be my last day of indulgences before I become conscious of my weight again. At 5′2 and 130lbs., I’m kinda chubby. I was also planning to take my whole family out of town this weekend but I didn’t anticipate that it’s gonna be a long weekend so booking a villa or hotel room is impossible now. I also thought about throwing a spa party for all my friends but when I inquired about the cost, I said no way. I’d rather save up for a new laptop or upgrade my camera. So, I ended up doing nothing at all.
Birthdays are like new years. They are time to make resolutions. Fresh start, clean slate. Below are my birthday resolutions. Whether I keep them or not, at least, they’re here so I can go back to them when I need reminding and spanking….
- Watch what I eat. Limit softdrinks to two cans a week.
- Exercise at least twice a week.
- Read more, watch less TV.
- Get out of credit card debt (I dunno how to go about this)
- Save money.
- Learn to cook something new. Enroll in a cooking class.
- Get organized. Throw out or donate old stuff. Clothes that don’t fit anymore etc…
- Take a trip at least once in 3 months and de-stress.
- Donate to World Vision or support one kid’s education.
I could go on and on but that might defeat the purpose of having resolutions. One needs to keep them and if the list is too long, chances are. you might not even get to top 5.
Just keeping my fingers crossed….
