My Kid Has Autism Spectrum Disorder

My youngest was assessed as having Autism Spectrum Disorder. She manifests mild to moderate delays in all developmental areas with gross and fine motor skills showing the least delay while cognitive, communication and socio-emotional skills proving to be problem areas for her.

MG is a sweet, affectionate and playful kid. She’s fond of playing peek-a-boo with adults around her and likes to affectionate play (tickling, kissing, hugging) as well. She likes Barney a lot and actually grew up watching it.

She’s undergoing therapy for a year now and has shown great improvement. She can now communicate basic wants and needs mostly one-word utterances or gestures. She can easily learn new skills and concepts and able to apply newly learned skills without much assistance. She can now name common body parts, most colors and shapes. She can also easily identify letters of her name and counts from 1-20 with ease.

She has acquired much skills and learned a lot this past year but she still has a long way to go. I’m very optimistic that she can overcome this all the way . With daily practice and application of learned skills and with me, her father and brother beside her, MG can advance and progress further.

  4. My son is on the spectrum as well. I don’t know if it’s available in your area, but we’ve seen phenominal improvement with a therapy called Relationship Development Intervention (aka RDI)
    you can go to

    http://www.rdiconnect.com

for more information on the program and you can go to

    http://www.rdiconnect.com/RDI/consultants.asp

to see if there is a consultant in your area if you’re interested. I know that every child is different, but I always feel better getting new information that has helped others as well.
